It is not news that a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle are frequently associated with being old, fat and falling apart. It is no surprise that an active lifestyle, a positive outlook and a diet consisting of nutritious foods are essential to preventing, slowing and possibly reversing the slide down the slippery slope of decrepitude and an unpleasant exit form this life. Keith and I know this, yet still the “diets” have failed, the exercise is lacking, our individual Basil Metabolic Index (BMI) is disturbing. We’re good with food quality and resist the lure of fast foods and junk foods. Actually, we’ve become quite the food snobs. It’s true, we slice, dice, steam, sauté, boil, broil or bake our supper most nights, always making extra for the lunches we will pack the next day. Breakfast is easy, quick, nutritious and delicious. During the growing season we spend less at the supermarket and more at the farmers market. Each spring our vegetable garden grows bigger. Each fall our freezer is a little fuller with our harvest. We have learned that “diets” which ask us to drink this shake, microwave this box, ban entire food groups or eat foods native to a distant coast line do not work for us. Yes, the food quality is great but our serving portions and exercise are in desperate need of modification. Our journey continues and we invite you to join us on September 24, 2008 at The Riverview Retreat for a joyful evening of companionship and a potluck. After supper Keith and I will be discussing our upcoming series of classes “Feed Your Body and Thrive”. In those classes we will all be dicing and slicing, steaming, sautéing, boiling, broiling and baking. We’ll walk and stretch, we’ll moan and groan as we share the road on this journey to radiant health. Keith Fellers M.Ed: I’m a self taught cook, with help from friends along the way (a special thanks to Kathleen and Gus) and have been a vegetarian for the past 18 years. Where as Laura, is an opportunivore, she will eat nearly anything nutritious in moderation. Food is intimate love. Various selections are familiar and comforting or new and exciting. Quality ingredients and thoughtfulness of preparation bring flavors to their peak. The aromas heighten the anticipation of the first taste. Each bite fills the mouth with ecstasy. Wave after wave of flavor is an orgasm of culinary delights. As the last morsel is savored one feels pleasantly satisfied and nurtured. Join us in discussing nutrition, choosing locally grown foods, proper preparation and how we consume what we eat in a healthy nurturing way. Laura L. Shook D.C.: As a chiropractor I frequently work with people whose bodies are failing them. A lack of exercise and a diet of processed foods have left them loosing a battle with the force of gravity. I work with my hands to bring balance to their catawampus bodies. Guiding them step by step, I act as a guide on the road to improved strength and flexibility. Take a few steps with us at The Riverview Retreat, shake off that fast food addiction and learn the wondrous power of nutritious and delicious home cooking. September 24th, 2008 potluck: A donation of $5.00 is suggested. All funds go to support the maintenance of The Riverview Retreat. Feed Your Body and Thrive: Classes starting in October 2008 and continuing monthly for the next year. A fee of $25 per class will go to pay for the cost of food with all remaining proceeds donated to The Riverview Retreat. |
